New Initiatives / Project Highlights
Construction is well underway for the 22,000 seat multi-purpose arena between 2nd and 3rd streets on the north side of West Main Street. The KFC Yum! Center will serve as the home of the University of Louisville Cardinals and will host concerts and other community events. The Arena is due to open in October 2010.
Museum Plaza is a mixed use development to be constructed adjacent to the Muhammad Ali Center. Three towers will rise to 22 stories and there will meet a 1 ½ acre “island in the sky." From the island the three towers will continue, with one tower rising an additional 39 stories. The structure will house a hotel, apartments, condominiums, office space, a museum and educational space. Designed by the architectural firm of REX, the 703 foot structure will dramatically change the downtown skyline.
Downtown’s supply of market-rate housing has increased dramatically in the last four years. Today downtown and the adjacent areas have nearly 2000 units completed, under construction or about to break ground, with an additional 1,200 units in the pipeline. The East Main and Market District is emerging as a strong mixed use neighborhood, with construction abounding. Fleur-de-Lis on Main project is complete. The project added 82 condominiums, along with retail and commercial space at street-level.
